Welsh, Glasgow’s 23-year-old prop, is listed among the league’s brightest young stars for the Magners Young Player of the Season award. The prize is open only to those players who were under 23 and uncapped at the start of the season. They also had to play a minimum of 300 minutes in the 2009/10 campaign.

Having spent his first year as a professional working on his fitness and conditioning, Welsh made a significant impact in the Warriors’ front row when he finally took to the field.

His stand-out performances, which regularly saw him selected ahead of two seasoned internationalists in Kevin Tkachuk and Justin Va’a, the former electrician went onto win two Scotland ‘A’ caps in November, something he hopes to add to in the very near future.

He said: “It’s a huge honour for me to play for Glasgow. It’s my hometown club and I’m excited to live my boyhood dream each and every day.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be named alongside so many great young players, but with that, I also recognise that I have some stiff opposition for this award.”
