The underdogs, with a performance of typical Borders grit, came close to causing a Scottish Cup upset on a heavy pitch, which tested the fitness levels of all the players. But the sheer physical presence of a GHA side, which included three ex-professionals, proved the difference.

“We had little answer to their driving mauls, although we did well to come back,” said YM coach Jammie Macfarlane.

Keith Davies collected a loose ball and burst away for a YM try converted by Neil Renwick with 12 minutes left to cut the deficit to seven points. However, as YM pressed for the equalising score, the ball was knocked on and broke to Niall Cassie, who showed football skills to seal the contest.

YM had been outdone by a brace of tries either side of half-time from Rory Watson and a push-over score from N.o8 Sean Kearns, after Dean McCracken’s opener.
