Stirling County were left hugely satisfied with their day’s work after beating the club which came up with them from Premiership Two.

While backs coach Ian Jardine said “it was definitely a good all-round performance; a good start to the season”, forwards coach, Jocky Bryce, added: “I thought we should have scored more points; we should have kept it in the hands.”

Stirling looked nervy in the opening quarter, making a series of errors, which allowed GHA to edge 6-0 ahead from two Jim Noonan penalties. From the moment debutant stand-off Massey Tuhakaraina sped under the posts following Graham Lyndsay’s lovely break, Stirling’s confidence soared, and it was mostly one-way traffic thereafter. Winger Ben Addison scored the next try and set up the third for Tim Clarke, and, with Brian Archibald’s two conversions, it was 6-19 at the break. A third Noonan penalty briefly halted the rout, but Alex Moffat, John Hope and Sam Parlane added tries before the hour mark. Hope converted Parlane’s score to complete the 36-9 victory.

GHA forwards coach Bill MacDonald said: “A lot of these guys are playing in Premier 1 for the first time, so it’s a whole new world, as you could see by the physicality of Stirling. They were more physical all round.”
