Andrew Dewar Williams, 16/10/22 – 15/11/15

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of club legend Andy Williams. ‘Big Andy’ was a driving force behind Clarkston RFC for several decades. He joined in season 1947/48 and played 1st XV until 62/63 – aged 41 and during that period was captain 11 times and vice captain 3 times. He was a prolific points scorer and in his last season scored 4 tries, 21 conversions and 12 penalties. He played Number 8 and was acknowledged as a lineout expert in the days when that was recipe for serious aggression from the opposition. Interfering with the jumper was  a career choice!

Between 1949 and 1958 he played 18 times in representative matches and also played each season for Renfrewshire district. After he retired from playing he became club coach (in an era when such a position was unusual) and remained in post for 15 years during which the club cemented its position in Scottish rugby and moved home from Overlee Playing Fields to Braidholm.

He strongly supported the club’s amalgamation with Hutchesons Aloysians and was never happier in his later years than at Braidholm on Saturday afternoons watching and supporting GHA.

He retained his title as Honorary President to the present and was very proud of that position.

The funeral will be a small family only affair.
