Braidholm eased to a comfortable win, 45 -7, over Mid-Argyll in the first league match of the season. In conditions that were far from ideal the game kicked off 25 minutes late after Mid-Argyll got lost in and around Giffnock, Spiersbridge, Thornliebank, Saltcoats etc.

Braidholm got off to a good start, in the first 5 minutes, with a long clearance kick from inside Braidholm’s 22 by Euan Greer, Danny Clafferty chased up the kick and pounced on a defensive mistake to score under the posts, converted by Gordon Adams, 7-0. Due to the poor weather conditions there was a lot of scrappy play with lots of handling errors, although a cross kick from Gordon Adams allowed Danny Clafferty to jump above his opposite number and flick the ball to Euan Greer who scored in the corner, Adams failed with the conversion, 12-0. After some good phases of play Braidholm scored again with George Sweeney breaking through the line and scoring adjacent to the posts leaving an easy conversion for Adams who obliged comfortably, 19-0. To complete the scoring in the first half, from a tight position on the left wing Danny Clafferty jinked past several defenders to score under the posts, Adams duly converted, 26-0.

Playing uphill at Auldhouse didn’t seem to faze the boys for the first part of the second half when three tries were scored. Euan Greer scored the next ably converted by Adams, 33-0. From a short penalty close to the line the ball was given to Boris Boum, who scored taking several Mid-Argyll bodies with him, Adams failed with the conversion from wide out, 38-0. Finally Gordon Adams broke through the line and scored, converting his own try, 45-0. Credit to Mid-Argyll they kept going, and with the referee making some strange decisions, awarded a penalty try for an offside infringement. This was several metres from the goal line and it wasn’t obvious to this spectator that Mid Argyll, would have scored then or at any other time during the game.

The game was marred at the end with the sending off of one of the Mid-Argyll forwards for stamping on one of the Braidholm players head. The Braidholm player will remain nameless in case anyone thinks this improved his looks!!!!
